The 2009 Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time, directed by James Cameron, the movie was way ahead of its time.

The VFX in the Avatar 1 was so good that no one had ever seen any movie like it, not just VFX but the story was great as well.

The reason why Avatar 2 took so long is because James Cameron wanted to amaze the audience again, specially after achieving a very big success from Avatar 1.

As James Cameron is also a deep sea explorer, he wanted to make this film mostly under water, but the technology in 2012 did not allowed him to do so.

Avatar 2 is going to be a epic movie considering that it is mostly underwater and James has pushed the limits of 3D in this film, Underwater 3D! that sounds great.
